The governments of Kwara and Oyo states have announced the postponement of the Basic Education Certificate Examination initially scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In separate statements issued on Tuesday, the education ministries of both states said the shift in schedule followed the public holiday declared by the Federal Government to mourn the late Nigerian leader.

In Kwara State, the BECE was rescheduled to Thursday, July 17, 2025, while Oyo State postponed the examination until further notice.

The Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, according to a statement by the Press Secretary in the ministry, Peter Amogbonjaye, said: “This postponement is due to the public holiday earlier declared by the Federal Government in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.”

The statement asked students, parents, guardians and school administrators to particularly take note of changes in the examination date.

“The ministry regrets any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciates the continued cooperation and understanding of all stakeholders,” the statement said.

A statement by the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, in Ibadan, said, “The decision was taken in line with the public holiday declared by the Federal Government in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who recently passed away.”

He said, “The affected subjects, Mathematics and Pre-Vocational Studies, have been postponed until further notice.”

Olayiwola urged the students, parents, and other stakeholders to take note of the development and assured them that other examination papers from Wednesday, July 16, 2025, would be held as scheduled.
