The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, has pledged enhanced security support for Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, amid rising concerns over robberies targeting students in the area.

During an official visit to the institution, the police chief endorsed new security policies introduced by the university and local stakeholders to curb criminal activities, particularly those affecting privately owned student hostels.

The visit follows a series of coordinated measures announced by the university management and Malete community leaders, which include movement restrictions and curfews aimed at preventing housebreaking and late-night attacks. Confirming the development in Ilorin, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the visit was part of a broader intervention to strengthen civil-police collaboration and restore confidence among students and residents.

Welcoming the Commissioner, the Vice Chancellor of KWASU, Prof. Shaykh Luqman Alade Jimoh, commended the Malete Divisional Police Officer and his team for their professionalism and efforts in maintaining order. He noted that the university had activated its internal security committee and rolled out tough new policies to enhance safety in and around the campus.

Among the newly adopted security measures are compulsory engagement of vigilante personnel by private hostel owners, enforcement of curfews on commercial motorcycles (Okada) beyond 10 p.m., and mandatory closure of campus shops by 11 p.m. In addition, students are restricted from using generators past midnight to curb noise and reduce exposure to potential threats. Prof. Jimoh made it clear that hostels which fail to comply with the new rules will not be recommended to students.

The Vice Chancellor also praised community leaders for their ongoing collaboration and commitment to maintaining a safe academic environment. In his remarks, Commissioner Ojo lauded the university’s proactive approach and assured the institution of continued police support from the Divisional Headquarters. He stated, “We are committed to backing the university fully. These are well-structured policies, and we will work to ensure they are enforced effectively.”

Ojo further praised the KWASU Students’ Union Government for cooperating with the security agencies and described student leaders as essential partners in the peacebuilding process. Addressing concerns about recent robberies, the police commissioner confirmed that investigations are underway and pledged to bring the culprits to justice. “We won’t rest until full confidence is restored,” he said.

In a firm stance on civil rights, Ojo warned officers against illegal phone searches, stating clearly that such actions are a breach of personal liberties and are not authorised. “Searching phones on the street is illegal. Any officer caught doing that will be sanctioned,” he declared.

The Commissioner also visited the hostel recently affected by a robbery incident, where he met with students, offered security tips, and urged them to report any suspicious activity promptly. The visit is seen as a confidence-boosting measure at a time when safety remains a major concern for students living off-campus.
