Lagos City Senior College, Yaba, representing Education District IV, has emerged as the Lagos State winner of the 10th edition of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature, Democracy and Governance.
The competition, organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), took place on Tuesday at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Akoka. It featured students from the six education districts of Lagos State, all competing on their knowledge of democracy, civic responsibility, governance, and legislative processes.
After a series of tightly contested rounds, Lagos City Senior College secured the top position with 50 points. Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, representing Education District II, finished as the first runner-up with 45 points, while State Senior High School, Ibereko, representing Education District V, came third with 30 points. The victory qualified Lagos City Senior College to represent Lagos State at the South-West zonal level of the competition, scheduled to hold in Akure, Ondo State, on October 30.
In his address, Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju, former Minister of National Planning and Director-General of NILDS, expressed delight over the students’ outstanding performance and their enthusiasm for democratic learning. Represented by Mrs Abisola Ojogiwa, the Chief Accounts Officer of the Institute, Olanrewaju noted that the competition aligns with NILDS’ mission to deepen civic and legislative education among young Nigerians.
According to him, the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy was first introduced in 2016 and initially limited to schools within the Federal Capital Territory. Following its success, the Governing Council of NILDS approved its nationwide expansion in 2022. “Since its expansion, the competition has evolved into a vital platform that promotes civic awareness, legislative literacy, and democratic participation among students across the federation,” he said.
Olanrewaju further described the 2025 edition as the 10th overall and the fourth to be held at the national level, highlighting NILDS’ commitment to nurturing civic-minded youths through intellectual engagement. He congratulated the winning schools for their diligence and encouraged them to build on their understanding of democratic principles and legislative processes.

Speaking on behalf of the institute, Ojogiwa urged the students to take their civic education beyond the competition. She explained that the quiz was designed to inspire active citizenship, strengthen democratic knowledge, and help students appreciate the workings of government. “This annual exercise aims to stimulate students’ interest in governance and politics, encouraging them to engage with issues that shape our democracy and development,” she stated.
In his remarks, the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, commended NILDS for sustaining the initiative over the years. Represented by Mrs Oluwatoyin Williams, Director of Child Guidance, School Counselling and Special Education Units, the Commissioner described the competition as a laudable effort that reinforces civic values and motivates students to learn more about public governance.
A teacher from Lagos City Senior College, Mr Jubril Ahmed, expressed pride in the students’ achievement, attributing their success to discipline, hard work, and perseverance. He noted that the victory was only the beginning of a larger responsibility as the students prepare to compete at the regional level. “This competition tested their knowledge and broadened their understanding of legislative governance. We are determined to build on this success and prepare them to make Lagos proud at the zonal stage,” Ahmed said.

Certificates of participation were presented to all schools that took part in the competition, while winners of bonus rounds received notebooks and other school materials. Schools represented included; Lagos City Senior College, Oriwu Senior Model College, Vetland Senior Grammar School, Dolphin Senior High School, Estate Senior Grammar School, and State Senior High School, Ibereko.
With the victory, Lagos City Senior College will now lead the state’s delegation to the regional competition, as Lagos continues to demonstrate excellence in civic education and democratic awareness among its students.
