Lagos college provost advocates practice-focused education

The Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Akoka, Lagos, Wahab Azeez, PhD, has endorsed the importance of practice-focused education.

During a recent media briefing titled “On the occasion of the commencement of his second term in office, spanning from 26th May 2003 to 26th May 2027,” the provost highlighted the need to shift the emphasis away from theoretical education and prioritize practice-focused education, especially in technology, technical skills, and vocational training.

Azeez emphasised that Nigeria is in urgent need of intervention in the realm of technical and vocational education.

He stated that as part of his strategic plan for the next four years, he intends to establish a National Technical Vocational Training and Skills Acquisition program.

He said, “It is essential to develop our infrastructure and train personnel to reduce the significant capital flight incurred when sending students abroad for training. I implore the country’s leadership to declare a state of emergency in this critical area of our development.”

The provost expressed his vision of steering the college in a new direction, wherein practical education in technology, technical skills, and vocational training takes center stage. He envisions graduates who will become job creators and entrepreneurs, rather than mere job seekers.

Azeez also acknowledged several challenges faced by the college, including inadequate funding, limited land availability, staffing shortages, insufficient office spaces, teaching and learning equipment, and office furniture.

In response, he pledged to prioritize the digital and technological training of staff and students to meet the demands of the modern workplace during his second tenure.

“We will actively invest in and generate our own alternative power energy by collaborating with experts in Renewable and Solar Energy Power and Infrastructure,” he announced.
