Lagos, Delta schools resume today

Primary and secondary schools in Lagos and Delta states will resume today for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The Kano State government, which had earlier announced school resumption, however, postponed it for what it termed “some urgent reasons.”

Students had gone on a long vacation in Lagos State after the 2023/2024 session ended on July 19, 2024.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Mr Tolani Alli-Balogun, advised students to avoid vices such as gangsterism, bullying, and drug abuse.

“As we begin the 2024/2025 academic session, I want to extend my warmest welcome and best wishes to every pupil, student, teaching and non-teaching staff, and school leader. This new school session brings fresh opportunities for impactful learning, growth, and academic success,” he said.

The statement asked pupils and students to approach the new school calendar year with enthusiasm, curiosity, and dedication.

Addressing teachers and school staff, the commissioner said, “Your tireless efforts and commitment to shaping young minds are invaluable. These contributions are always appreciated by our dear Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, through a series of dedicated welfare initiatives for teachers and school personnel.”

In Delta, the government directed all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state to resume today, except in Oshimili South Local Government Area, where the resumption date was shifted to Monday, September 23.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Augustine Oghoro on behalf of the state Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu and his counterpart in charge of Secondary Education, Mrs Rose Ezewu, boarders were asked to resume on Sunday.

The statement said it extended the resumption date for private and public primary and secondary schools in Asaba and environs due to the eighth edition of the National Youth Game scheduled to be held in Asaba from Monday, September 9 to Thursday, September 19.

It urged school heads and teachers in the state to comply with the directive and ensure that they were in their duty posts to discharge their statutory responsibility.

For Kano State, a statement on Saturday evening by the Director of Public Enlightenment of the Ministry of Education, Balarabe Kiru, quoted the Commissioner of Education, Umar Doguwa, as saying that the decision to postpone the resumption date was compelled by some urgent reasons.

Doguwa, who declined to state the exact reason for the postponement, said another date for the school resumption would soon be announced by the ministry.

“I wish to inform pupils, students and parents that the announcement earlier made for school resumption on 8th and 9th Sept 2024 is now being postponed due to some urgent reasons that would help in improving conducive learning atmosphere for our children.

“Another day for the resumption will be announced in due course,” the commissioner was quoted as saying in the statement.
