The Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, under the leadership of Commissioner Tolani Sule, has launched a specialized scholarship program aimed at supporting People with Disabilities (PWDs) and financially disadvantaged students attending state-owned tertiary institutions.

This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and equal educational opportunities for all residents.

Sule, on Tuesday, said this was in alignment with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which prioritised inclusive development.

Speaking at a ministerial briefing in Ikeja, the commissioner said, “I am proud to unveil the Special Scholarship for Inclusion. This initiative is designed to support people living with disabilities and the multidimensionally poor, empowering them to pursue their educational aspirations and contribute meaningfully to society.
“It is crucial to note that the Special Scholarship for Inclusion extends beyond Lagos State indigenes. It encompasses all residents enrolled in Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions, irrespective of their states of origin. This underscores our commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for all residents of Lagos.”

The commissioner noted that the state government had allocated budgetary provisions in the 2024 budget to fulfill the plan through the introduction of the Special Scholarship for PWDs.

“We are committed to ensuring that every individual, regardless of their abilities or socio-economic background, has access to quality education,” the commissioner added.
Last year, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs appealed to the various local government areas and local council development areas in the state to complement the vision of the state government in creating education, healthcare policies and programmes to favour persons with disabilities.
