Lagos State prioritises teacher training for enhanced education quality

The Lagos State government has underscored the critical importance of capacity building for its educators to ensure the delivery of quality education.

In a recent development, the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, articulated this vision during a capacity training programme held in partnership with Casio Middle East\Africa and SKLD Integrated Services Limited.

The event, which brought together educators from across the state, focused on the theme of ‘Equipping Educators with Enquiry-Based Methodology and Accuracy Skills in the 21st Century Classroom.’

Commissioner Alli-Balogun emphasised the pressing need for educators to be well-equipped with essential skills and knowledge that would enhance their effectiveness in fostering a dynamic learning environment.

In his address, Alli-Balogun expressed that modern classrooms have transformed into vibrant hubs of knowledge and innovation, where students actively engage in their learning journeys.

He stated, “As educators, it is our responsibility to equip our students with the tools they need to become fit-for-purpose learners and compete favorably on a global scale, hence the essence of this training.”

He further highlighted the significance of inquiry-based methodology, which empowers students to ask questions, explore multiple perspectives, and critically analyze information.

“By engaging in inquiry, students develop essential skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication,” Alli-Balogun noted, urging educators to equip themselves with the necessary skills to guide their students effectively.

Moreover, participants were encouraged not only to improve their own capabilities but also to share their knowledge with their colleagues.

The Chairman of the Lagos Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Victoria Peregrino, emphasised the pivotal role of quality education and teachers in a country’s development.

She stressed that continuous capacity training programmes for teachers would enrich their knowledge and enhance their ability to perform optimally in their roles.

Koji Shimada, the general manager of CASIO, and Tayo Osiyemi, the Deputy Managing Director of SKLD, expressed their commitment to supporting the Lagos State government in providing quality education.

Their collaboration underscores the state’s dedication to nurturing a generation of well-prepared learners who can thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
