Landmark University celebrates 50 first-class graduates at 9th convocation ceremony

Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara state held its 9th Convocation Ceremony on Friday, May 19th, 2023, in a grand event that showcased the academic excellence of its graduating students. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charity Aremu, announced that a total of 50 First-Class degree holders and 67 Postgraduate degree holders were among the graduating students for the 2021/2022 Academic Session.

In her address, Professor Charity Aremu disclosed that the university awarded a total of 684 first and higher degrees and diplomas across its four colleges: the College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Business and Social Sciences, College of Engineering, and College of Pure and Applied Sciences. Among the graduates, 252 achieved a 2nd Class Upper degree, 293 obtained a 2nd Class Lower degree, and only 22 received a 3rd Class degree. Additionally, the university conferred 5 Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD), 53 Master of Science (MSc) degrees, and 9 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.

The highlight of the convocation ceremony was the announcement of the overall Best Graduands for first and higher degrees. Kayode Favour Oluwabunkunmi from the Department of Chemical Engineering emerged as the best graduand with a remarkable 4.93 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for his first degree. Ayorinde Bolajoko Bisola achieved a remarkable 4.98 CGPA in the Department of Soil Science for her master’s degree, while Ikubanni Peter Pelumi earned a perfect 5.00 CGPA in the Department of Mechanical Engineering for his PhD.

During the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Charity Aremu attributed the students’ academic achievements to the exceptional quality of academic standards, practical teaching and learning, and the overall ambiance of the university. She emphasised that Landmark University’s globally renowned status, coupled with its exceptional facilities and innovative courses, positioned its graduates for success in the competitive world of work. The Vice-Chancellor also expressed gratitude for the heartwarming compliments that the university constantly receives, validating its reputation as a world-class institution.

In her address, the Pro-Chancellor, Pastor (Mrs) Faith Oyedepo, urged the graduands to be forward-looking and embrace their role as change agents and reformers in society. She encouraged them to understand that even small beginnings have the potential to become great and emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for their lives.

Chancellor Dr David Oyedepo, in his speech titled “Espousing the Virtues of Responsibility,” highlighted the university’s commitment to producing graduates with a sense of responsibility. He emphasized that responsibility is the key to greatness and urged the graduands to manage themselves, their time, tasks, and resources efficiently. Dr Oyedepo cautioned against blaming others for one’s outcomes in life and emphasized the need for productive labor today to secure a successful future.

Divine Lewis, the Chairman of the Student Council for the Class of 2022, expressed gratitude to Landmark University for providing a unique education system that prepares them to be world changers. He specifically thanked the Chancellor, Dr David Oyedepo, for establishing the David Oyedepo Foundation Scholarship, which enabled him and other students to receive a quality education at the university.

The Registrar, Olushola Oyinloye, noted that Landmark University has achieved unparalleled success in its 12 years of existence. He expressed the university’s commitment to excellence and its dedication to producing individuals who add value to the nation.

The 9th Convocation Ceremony of Landmark University was attended by notable personalities, including the Deputy Governor of Kwara State, His Excellency Kayode Alabi, who was represented by Evangelist Professor Timothy Okunola from the University of Ilorin. Traditional rulers from the Omu-Aran environs, Vice-Chancellors from other universities, and representatives from the State CID and JAMB also graced the occasion.

The convocation ceremony also featured an exhibition of innovations and inventions by students and faculty members at the university’s SDGs Exhibition Centre. The event concluded with the Chancellor’s Luncheon, where guests were entertained.
