LASU alumna and ‘Masoyinbo’ Yoruba Game Show winner, Ayoka Roqeebat Kazeem, visits VC

Lagos State University (LASU) on Thursday, 10th July 2025, welcomed Ayoka Roqeebat Kazeem, a distinguished alumna and the first-ever recipient of a brand-new car on the popular Yoruba language game show Masoyinbo, during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor.

The event took place at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room on the 6th Floor of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, LASU, Ojo Campus.

Roqeebat’s extraordinary feat on the Masoyinbo game show underscores her intellectual excellence and mastery of the Yoruba language, attributes developed through her academic journey in the Department of Linguistics, African Languages and Communication Arts, Faculty of Arts, LASU.

In her address, Ayoka Roqeebat expressed profound gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, for her unwavering support of students.

She said, “I sincerely thank our Vice-Chancellor for her immense motherly role in ensuring LASU students have what it takes to stand out.”

She also acknowledged the support of her lecturers.

She stated, “I appreciate Dr Alimat Eleshin-Ajikobi and Dr Oyewole Olomu for their mentorship and guidance that contributed to my success.”

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi, praised Roqeebat for bringing pride to the university through her achievements in indigenous Yoruba studies. He also commended the lecturers for their dedication to student development.

Quoting the Vice-Chancellor’s remarks, “Roqeebat, your feat has made us so proud as it is one of the reasons LASU is now rated the Most Preferred University in Nigeria, with over 70,000 subscribers, according to JAMB’s 2025 rating. Though you are a fresh graduate, your staunch association with LASU makes us extremely proud of you.”

She also used the occasion to advise Nigerian families to promote their native languages at home, noting that: “Non-Africans from the West are never ashamed to speak their native and cultural languages.”

Dr Titilope Onadipe-Shalom, Head of Department, Linguistics, African Languages and Communication Arts, expressed her appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for her commitment to academic excellence and for securing full NUC accreditation for the department.

Mr. Samuel Otesanya, representing the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel A. Fanu, delivered the vote of thanks.

Other dignitaries present at the event included the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Ayo Ayodeji Ayodele; Professor Ahmed Adesanya; Dr. Alimat Eleshin-Ajikobi; Mr. Lawal Tobiloba; Dr. Oyewole Olomu; Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Fatai Abatan; Mr. Taiwo Omoyin; Dr. Lateef Salami; Mr. Johnson Bamgboye; and several members of staff from the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and the Centre for Information and Public Relations.
