A final-year student of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Lagos State University (LASU), Stephen Odoziaku, has emerged second in the third edition of the Space for Africa Essay Competition organized by the African Space Leadership Institute (ASLI).
This year’s edition required participants to write an essay outlining how space can be used to meet one of the goals of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Out of seventy-one (71) entries submitted from across the continent, Odoziaku’s essay distinguished itself and earned him one of the top three positions.
As part of his award, Stephen will receive scholarships to attend the 9th Africa Space Generation Workshop and the African Space Policy and Strategy (ASP) course at ASLI.
In addition, ASLI will support the publication of his work in both print and virtual formats.
The African Space Leadership Institute, founded in October 2022, is Africa’s first space-focused think tank. It was established to bridge critical gaps in space policy and decision-making on the continent.
ASLI is committed to supporting Africa’s outer space and national space programs by building knowledge and capacity in both engineering and non-engineering aspects of the space ecosystem.
In an official statement, the university celebrated Odoziaku’s achievement. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, extended her heartfelt congratulations to the student and the Faculty of Engineering for what she described as a “remarkable feat.”
“We are LASU, We are Great!” the university declared proudly.
