The Lagos State University (LASU) Senate has suspended all socio-academic activities, including the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, due to an ongoing industrial action by the institution’s staff unions.

The decision was made at a virtual Senate meeting held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, where members reviewed the impact of the strike action declared on Thursday, July 31, 2025, by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions. The JAC comprises the LASU chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

In a statement signed by Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi A., Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, the Senate noted that the main demands of the unions are directed at the Lagos State Government.

The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate informed members that the university management had, over the past few weeks, facilitated dialogue and pursued peaceful resolutions between the unions and the state government.

He further stated that a meeting was convened by the Lagos State Government on Friday, August 1, 2025. The meeting, held at the office of the Head of Service in Alausa, Ikeja, included representatives from the university management, the Joint Action Committee, and relevant ministries. It was chaired by the Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro.

“At the said meeting, it was agreed that further consultations would be held, with all parties reconvening on Thursday, August 7, 2025,” the statement read.

Following deliberations, the Senate resolved that the second semester examinations, initially scheduled to begin on Monday, August 4, 2025, be suspended. All other university activities are also to remain on hold until further notice.

Additionally, students residing in university hostels across the Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses have been directed to vacate the premises no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025.

The university urged all students and members of the LASU community to remain calm and law-abiding during this period.
