The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has strengthened its commitment to grassroots sports development through a strategic partnership with the National School Sport Federation (NSSF) ahead of the upcoming National School Board Games.

The collaboration, which focuses on chess and other board games, was solidified during a meeting between LASUBEB officials and NSSF President Mrs. Olabisi Joseph on January 29, 2025.

Mrs. Joseph underscored the significance of engaging young learners in sports, noting that such activities enhance both their physical and mental well-being while instilling critical values like teamwork, discipline, and leadership.

“We are excited to collaborate with the Board in organizing this year’s National School Board Games. The competition provides an excellent platform for pupils to showcase their talents, develop essential life skills, and represent their states in future sporting events,” she stated.

Welcoming the partnership, LASUBEB Executive Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, emphasized the board’s dedication to integrating sports into the academic curriculum of public primary schools.

“We recognize that fostering a balance between intellectual and physical growth is essential for shaping well-rounded individuals. This collaboration with the National School Sport Federation will further strengthen our efforts in providing opportunities for our pupils to excel not just academically but also in sports,” Dr. Shittu said.

He further assured Mrs. Joseph of LASUBEB’s full support in making the event a success, pledging to provide schools with the necessary sports facilities and resources to ensure effective participation.

The National School Board Games, particularly the chess competition, aims to inspire young minds and cultivate a new generation of strategic thinkers and competitive athletes across the federation.
