The Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) has reaffirmed its dedication to student welfare as it marks its 35th anniversary, outlining key accomplishments and unveiling new initiatives to enhance the student experience.
Speaking at a press conference to kick off the celebration, LASUSU President, Joldie Adebobola, noted that the union has recorded impressive strides since its inception and remains focused on delivering more impactful programmes.
Adebobola stated that the union’s priorities include student welfare, leadership development, and inclusivity. He listed several notable projects and initiatives under his administration, including the construction of sitting arenas in the Faculties of Education and Management Sciences, installation of digital screenboards, and mounting of solar-powered streetlights. “The union has also implemented programs such as LASUSU Mindwave, a mental health awareness summit, and LASUSU Freshers’ Week, a dynamic welcome campaign for new students,” he said.
Highlighting victories for students, Adebobola revealed that the union successfully reduced the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) participation fee from N10,000 to N1,000 and also secured the cancellation of CBT fees for 200 to 400-level students. He added that more programmes are on the way, including Ability Unleashed, a flagship inclusion initiative for students with disabilities, and the LASUSU Trade Fair, which aims to support student entrepreneurs.
The union president also announced plans for the launch of the LASUSU Brigade, a structured team that will handle ceremonial duties, traffic control, logistics support, and help maintain order on campus. “The union is also setting the groundwork for the formal launch of the LASUSU Brigade, a disciplined body that will combine ceremonial excellence, assistance in traffic control and safety, and support for union logistics and campus order,” he said.
The week-long anniversary celebration includes an anniversary lecture themed ‘Redefining Student Leadership in the 21st Century: Challenges and Prospects’,sports competitions, and Ojude LASU, a cultural festival that celebrates identity, tradition, and diversity within the university community.
