The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has unveiled the first-ever LIFT Fellows: Momodu Sheku Conteh and John Balla Marah, marking a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s journey toward sustainable, homegrown education reform.
The LIFT Fellowship—short for Leadership, Innovation, and Fellowship for Transformation—introduces a groundbreaking model for sector leadership.
It focuses on empowering local talent, grounding policy in evidence, and driving long-term transformation from within the country.
“This initiative is not just about professional development,” a senior MBSSE official explained. “It’s about reshaping how we lead and make decisions that truly reflect the needs of our schools, teachers, and most importantly, our learners.”
Fellows Momodu and John were selected for their outstanding commitment, curiosity, and compassion. They are now working hand-in-hand with international education experts and national policymakers to design inclusive, forward-looking education strategies tailored to Sierra Leone’s unique context.
The initiative is in line with President Julius Maada Bio’s ‘Big Five Game Changers’, particularly the focus on Human Capital Development and Radical Inclusion. The LIFT Fellowship represents a broader shift toward sustainable, locally led innovation in Sierra Leone’s education sector.
“Congratulations to our inaugural Fellows,” the Ministry stated. “Your leadership is the foundation of a brighter, more equitable education future for Sierra Leone.”
