The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have agreed to collaborate in addressing long-standing challenges affecting the sector.
During a courtesy visit to the NLC headquarters in Abuja, NANS President Mr. Olusola Ladoja led members of the students’ body to meet with Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Labour Congress, where both leaders decried the deteriorating state of education and the rising wave of insecurity in students’ hostels — including frequent incidents of armed robbery.
They jointly emphasized that technological advancement and national development depend largely on quality education, stressing that “students are the greatest beneficiaries of good education.”
As part of the resolution, NANS and NLC agreed to work together to press for effective government policies, particularly in ensuring the implementation of agreements reached with academic unions and improved funding for education. They urged the Federal Government to allocate at least 26% of the national budget to education, in line with UNESCO recommendations.
The two bodies also faulted the poor performance of certain government agencies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), noting that their interventions in education have fallen short of expectations.
“Education is the backbone of progress,” Ladoja said, reiterating the joint commitment of both organizations to drive sustainable reforms.
The meeting marks a significant step as NANS, NLC unite to tackle crisis in Nigeria’s education sector, signalling stronger student-labour synergy in policy advocacy and social reform.
