The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has vowed to shut down Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) commands that enforce a directive to impound members’ vehicles.
In a statement issued by the Clerk of the Senate, NANS National Headquarters, Oladimeji Uthman, and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the student body expressed outrage at the recent directive by the Corps Marshal of FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, instructing officers to arrest and impound vehicles associated with NANS structures.
Uthman described the directive as disrespectful and an affront to the operations of NANS, warning that any implementation of the policy would be met with massive protests.
“If any FRSC command arrests or impounds NANS vehicles—whether at the national, zonal, Joint Campus Council (JCC), or other levels—we will mobilise our armless battalions and stage massive protests to defend our rights. We will not tolerate any form of disrespect towards our organisation,” Uthman said.
The statement highlighted the longstanding cooperation between NANS and the FRSC, noting that mobility is essential for its advocacy, programmes, and responsibilities.
“Over the years, NANS has maintained a working relationship with the FRSC at both state and national levels, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation for the safety and welfare of Nigerian students. The directive to impound our vehicles undermines this relationship and disrupts our structured movement,” the statement added.
NANS called on the FRSC leadership to initiate constructive dialogue to address concerns amicably. Uthman urged the Corps Marshal to prioritise meaningful engagement over actions that could escalate tensions.
“Engaging in discussions will help resolve issues peacefully and avoid unnecessary confrontations between NANS and FRSC officials,” he stated.
Reiterating NANS’ commitment to representing Nigerian students, Uthman assured that the association would continue to pursue responsive and responsible leadership in its dealings with government agencies.
