As part of its 25th anniversary vision, the Niger Delta University (NDU) has decided to take a bold steps to reposition itself as a research-driven institution with national relevance. In a strategic move, the university is forging a partnership with the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) to deepen innovation, drive impactful research, and contribute to Nigeria’s development goals.
During a recent visit to the NBRDA headquarters in Abuja, NDU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Allen Agih, initiated discussions to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would enable both institutions to collaborate on joint research, capacity building, and the commercialisation of scientific innovations.
“This year marks NDU’s 25th anniversary. While we have made significant strides in academics, there is now a renewed focus on enhancing our research capabilities to better serve the Niger Delta region and contribute meaningfully to national progress,” Agih stated.
He praised the NBRDA for its pioneering role in applying biotechnology to solve Nigeria’s critical challenges and expressed confidence that the collaboration would yield far-reaching results.
Also speaking during the visit, NDU’s Director of Research and Development, Dr. Engr. Lucky Bebeteidoh, highlighted the importance of leveraging the expertise and infrastructure of NBRDA, especially through its Bioresources Development Centre in Odi, Bayelsa State. He noted that access to NBRDA’s extensive network of research centres across the country would enhance innovation, facilitate knowledge exchange, and support economic development.
The NDU delegation was warmly received by NBRDA’s Director General, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, who expressed strong support for the initiative. He assured the visiting team of the agency’s readiness to assign experts from relevant technical departments to collaborate with NDU’s research team across identified priority areas.
“This partnership will catalyse innovative solutions, accelerate research, and drive sustainable development across the country,” Mustapha stated.
The anticipated MoU, expected to be finalised soon, will provide a framework for joint projects that empower researchers and students alike, while advancing Nigeria’s transition toward a knowledge-based economy.
The NDU delegation also included Dr. Emmanuel Amaegbe, Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor, underscoring the university’s commitment to translating academic excellence into real-world impact.
