NSUK SUG president suspended over misconduct, tragedy

The President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), Comrade Buhari Ari Ibrahim, commonly known as Bombay, has been indefinitely suspended from his position with immediate effect due to allegations of gross misconduct.

The decision was reached by the Legislative Arm of the Union following an emergency plenary session convened at the university’s Faculty of Law Moot Court.

In a letter dated March 26, the legislature cited five specific offences as grounds for the suspension, in accordance with Article Six, Section 5(2)(c) of the union’s constitution. Among these allegations, Buhari stands accused of failing to establish appropriate procedures for the distribution of state-provided student palliatives. It is claimed that he unilaterally introduced a ‘palliative beneficiary card’ without Senate approval, resulting in a tragic stampede causing student fatalities and injuries.

Additional charges include Buhari’s failure to cooperate with a Senate-appointed investigative committee, neglecting to convene and preside over Executive Committee (EXCO) meetings as mandated, being inaccessible, and neglecting to obtain the necessary signatures for union account transactions. Consequently, the Senate has instructed Buhari to transfer all union responsibilities and documents to his Vice President, Rasheedah Aroke, pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation by a designated committee.

Furthermore, Buhari has been admonished against accessing the SUG Secretariat or its documents during his suspension. The decision to suspend Buhari was reached during the plenary session following a motion put forward by Senator Emmanuel Jeremiah Ablaba and seconded by Senator Abdulkareem Anzaku, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Business.
