The National University Commission (NUC) has applauded the Delta State government in a demonstration of recognition for its significant strides in the realm of sustainable educational advancement. . The commendation was expressed by Chris Maiyaki, the acting executive secretary of the NUC, during a formal visit by the commission to the governor at the government house in Asaba.

Maiyaki articulated that the timing of this visit was particularly pertinent, “given the growing clamour for a thorough reevaluation and rejuvenation of the higher education framework.”

Addressing the governor, he extended his praise, remarking, “Your Excellency, we extend our hearty congratulations to your administration for its steadfast commitment to fostering an educationally conducive environment.

“Notably, historical records indicate that the university we are currently visiting came to fruition during your tenure as speaker of the state House of Assembly.”

He further expounded, stating, “It was under your esteemed leadership that, with your endorsement, we sanctioned and granted licenses to the University of Delta, Agbor, the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, and the Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai-Asaba.”

Maiyaki emphasised the NUC’s lawful mandate, explaining, “The NUC is entrusted by law with the pivotal and strategic responsibility of orchestrating the structured development of university education, encompassing the comprehensive coordination and regulation of this sector. Our execution of this essential task involves meticulous oversight of the implementation of minimum standards, issuance of licenses to private universities, conduction of resource verification, and accreditation of academic courses, among other responsibilities.”

He further elucidated the purpose of the current visit, stating, “Our purpose in being here today is to conduct a comprehensive resource verification of the academic programmes at the University of Delta, Agbor. This endeavor aims to ascertain the caliber and quantity of physical infrastructure, human resources, information and communication technology deployments, as well as the availability of learning materials in both digital and tangible formats. Additionally, we seek to gauge the prevailing learning environment.”

Expressing gratitude,Maiyaki acknowledged the governor’s unwavering commitment to the sustainable funding and reinforcement of the university and the broader spectrum of higher learning institutions within Delta State.

Responding to these commendations, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasised the preeminence of education within the state’s agenda. He affirmed the State’s resolute dedication to keeping its students on an unwavering trajectory of excellence and focus.

In a warm reception, Governor Oborevwori welcomed the commission to the state and extended gratitude to the NUC for according approval to establish three new universities within Delta.

He highlighted the cogency of the new universities’ establishment and praised the swift legislative action taken by the House of Assembly, which he presided over at the time, in swiftly endorsing the bills governing the creation of these institutions.
