The National Universities Commission (NUC), has grants recognition to Imo State University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Omumma.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State announced that the newly established University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Omumma, will play a key role in expanding educational opportunities and driving innovation in Nigeria.
He made this known in Abuja when the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, formally presented him with the Certificate of Recognition for the institution.
Uzodimma described the establishment of the university as part of his administration’s vision to create broader access to quality education and equip young people with the skills needed for the 21st-century economy.
“It is an honour and a moment of appreciation to the management and staff of NUC in recognising this university,” the governor said. “It is part of our quest to broaden education and create wider access for our youth population. This university will encourage digital skills innovation, science, and technology.”
He emphasized that the institution would be instrumental in reducing the struggle of young people to gain admission into higher institutions while preparing them to become active contributors to the economy.
“Imo State wants our youths to be properly educated to support the growth of our economy and quality itself. The institution will be in partnership with Imo Digital City and the University of Berkeley, California, which will serve as the mentoring institution and help design a practical, innovation-driven curriculum,” Uzodimma added.
He further noted that the focus of the university would be on entrepreneurship and technology-based learning, producing graduates who are “employers and job creators.”
In his remarks, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, the NUC Executive Secretary, commended the Imo State Government for its dedication to expanding educational access and promoting knowledge-based development.
“The university is a statement of the state government’s commitment to education and to ensuring that tertiary education meets the highest standards in Nigeria,” Ribadu said.
He added that the approval reflects NUC’s ongoing efforts to support institutions that align with national priorities for human capital development and innovation.
The establishment of the University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Omumma, adds to the growing number of state-owned universities in Nigeria aimed at equipping young people with relevant skills in science, technology, and digital innovation to meet global challenges.
