The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has raised alarm over the escalating cost of telecommunications services and internet data across Nigeria, describing it as a growing hardship for citizens already battling economic challenges.
In a communiqué issued following its congress in Abuja, the union called the situation “a heavy financial burden on citizens,” citing concerns about affordability and the deteriorating state of telecom infrastructure.
The statement, jointly signed by Odigie Kelvin, chairman of the communiqué committee, and members Kehinde Ayanfe and Ebriku John, reflected a collective outcry from journalists in the capital region who rely heavily on internet connectivity for their work.
The NUJ FCT Council urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to immediately investigate prevailing billing practices among telecom operators. The union emphasized the need for regulatory intervention, stressing the importance of protecting consumers from arbitrary charges and ensuring access to reliable services.
“Our members and ordinary Nigerians are struggling to stay connected,” the communiqué implied, as the union demanded accountability and a more citizen-focused approach to telecom regulation.
