The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has strongly condemned the recent armed robbery attack on its students, describing the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable.”

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the attack occurred on Monday, October 20, 2025, when armed men invaded Oreoluwa Hostel within Moremi Estate, Ile-Ife metropolis. The robbers reportedly dispossessed students of their valuables and injured three during the hour-long operation.

“The prompt actions of the University Students’ Union officials, who conveyed the injured students to the University Health and Medical Centre, were applauded by the University administration,” Olarewaju stated.

He identified the affected students as Ogedengbe Emmanuel Oluwafemi, Emmanuel Akinribiye, both of the Department of Management and Accounting, and Olalekan David Okemiga, a final-year student of Mathematics. The students sustained varying degrees of machete wounds but are currently responding to treatment at the University Health Centre.

In reaction, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, condemned the incident and commended the swift intervention of officers from the Nigerian Police (A Division, Ile-Ife, and Oke-Otubu Division, Modakeke). He urged security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to step up surveillance and patrols around student hostels to ensure their safety.

“We wish the injured students a speedy recovery and express gratitude to God for sparing their lives,” Bamire added.

The Vice Chancellor further appealed to stakeholders and philanthropists to support the construction of additional on-campus hostels, saying it would help enhance monitoring and protection of students within the university environment.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Command has confirmed the attack. Its spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, stated that investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects behind the act.
