OAU Medical Students Commits Suicide After Failing Exam Twice

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a Part Two medical student, Ajibola Ibitayo, who reportedly took his own life after failing his examination for the second time.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, said Ibitayo, with matriculation number DEN/2021/023, committed suicide after learning that he would have to repeat Part Two of the Faculty of Dentistry for another academic year.

“The entire community of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been thrown into mourning following the death of a Part Two student of the Faculty of Dentistry,” Olarewaju stated.

“The student, whose father is a medical doctor, reportedly injected himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State. He had already been repeating Part Two during the last session,” he added.

According to Olarewaju, the results of the examinations were released on Wednesday, revealing that Ibitayo would need to repeat the same level again — a situation that may have triggered his action.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simeon Bamire expressed deep sorrow over the loss, urging parents and guardians to help their children understand that setbacks are part of life’s journey.

“Temporary setbacks in the pursuit of success are not the end of life. Failure should be seen as an opportunity to redirect one’s path toward greater achievements,” Bamire advised.

The Vice-Chancellor prayed for divine strength for the bereaved family, the Faculty of Dentistry, the College of Health Sciences, and the university community to bear the loss.
