Osun college unveils N15m solar-powered streetlights

The Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, celebrated a major achievement with the commissioning of a N15m solar-powered streetlight project.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Esa-Oke Renewal Initiative in partnership with Cedrus Group Africa, represents a significant advancement in the college’s efforts towards sustainable development and improved campus security.

During the commissioning ceremony, the Rector of OSCOTECH, Dr Samson Adegoke in a statement expressed his deep appreciation for the completion of the project.

He stressed the importance of the college’s relationship with the local community and noted that this collaboration was beginning to yield tangible benefits.

“This solar lighting of the campus, which we are witnessing today, is just the beginning of many positive changes we have long anticipated from our host community. We hope to soon announce additional projects initiated by the community for the college,” Adegoke said.

He emphasised the mutual benefits between the college and the Esa-Oke community, pointing out that the institution’s presence had significantly contributed to the town’s development since its establishment in 1992.

 Adegoke also appealed to the community and alumni to support the college further by contributing to the construction of hostels, classrooms, and laboratories.

“Alumni can donate buildings for hostel blocks, classroom blocks, workshops, laboratories, and auditoria to complement the efforts of the State Government. Vehicles, computers, and laboratory equipment are also needed to enhance learning and practical experiences,” he added.

CEO of Cedrus Group Africa, Mr Olubusayo Adeniyi, explained the broader impact of the project. “This project is more than just lighting our paths; it is a testament to our commitment to sustainability, community development, and a brighter future for all,” he said.

Adeniyi said that the project aligned with Cedrus Group Africa’s environmental, social, and governance principles.

“By harnessing solar power, we are reducing the community’s reliance on fossil fuels, cutting carbon emissions, and contributing to a cleaner, greener environment. These lights will enhance safety and security for students and staff, allowing them to navigate the campus confidently after dark,” he noted.

The event was also attended by Osun State Commissioner for Education, Mr Eluwole Adedipo, who praised the project’s impact on the institution.

“Education is light and life. Without education, we remain ignorant, and without light, there can be no education,” he stated.

Adedipo urged the Rector and alumni to continue their efforts to elevate the college’s status, saying that the government alone could not address all the needs of the state’s educational institutions.
