A lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) is facing heavy backlash after a viral video showed him smashing a student’s architectural model during an assessment session.
In the clip, which has amassed more than 160,000 views online, the lecturer is seen striking the meticulously crafted model with a stick, accusing the student of outsourcing the work. The video drew immediate condemnation from viewers, who described the model as detailed and well-constructed, questioning the basis of the lecturer’s reaction.
Students and the general public have since slammed the lecturer’s behaviour as unprofessional, intimidating, and psychologically damaging. Many argue that such hostile jury methods discourage creativity and foster fear rather than learning.
The incident has reignited broader concerns over the state of architecture education in Nigeria — from the intense pressure associated with jury presentations to recurring allegations of plagiarism and the rising cost of producing physical models.
