The Oyo State Government on Tuesday has distributed 18,000 tablet devices to teachers in public primary and secondary schools across all 33 local government areas, in a bid to boost teaching efficiency and improve learning outcomes.
Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, led the presentation ceremony at Emmanuel College, Agbowo, Ibadan. He announced that all beneficiaries would undergo a compulsory four-week training at 16 centres statewide to ensure effective use of the devices.
The initiative, facilitated by the Global Partnership in Education and sponsored by the World Bank in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), is part of ongoing efforts to digitalise education in the state.

Makinde described the programme as a “bold step towards digitalising education,” noting that each tablet is preloaded with teaching resources, academic materials, and e-learning tools to help teachers prepare and deliver lessons more effectively.
“This is not just about giving out gadgets; it is about equipping our teachers with modern tools to match global best practices in education. We are determined to raise the standard of teaching and ensure our children get the best learning experience possible,” he said.
According to the governor, the devices will also enable the tracking of lesson plans, assessment of student performance, and provision of real-time data for educational planning and policy formulation. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the sector, noting that the 2025 education budget already surpasses the UNESCO funding benchmark.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Intervention, Suraj Tiamiyu, said the training sessions would be decentralised across 16 centres, while SUBEB Chairman, Nureni Adeniran, expressed optimism that the initiative would improve both teaching quality and student outcomes.
