Phoenix University pioneers robotics, AI laboratory

Phoenix University in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art Robotics and Artificial Intelligence laboratory, marking a significant leap in technological education.

The initiative, approved by the National Universities Commission, underscores the institution’s commitment to enriching students’ academic pursuits with practical skills.

The unveiling took place during a press briefing held on Thursday in Kokona, Nasarawa, where the Vice-Chancellor, Abdullahi Bala, detailed the university’s vision behind the cutting-edge laboratory.

Emphasizing the university’s aspiration to carve a distinctive niche, Bala highlighted the pivotal role the center will play in fostering expertise in research and development across robotics, artificial intelligence, and business innovation.

“The Centre will ultimately become the hub for our community service and engagement where inspiring and entrepreneurial ideas will be developed, tested, and brought to life under the guidance of teachers, entrepreneurial mentors, and artisans,” explained Bala.

The facility comprises five units dedicated to hardware and software for robotics and drones, Virtual and Augmented Reality, and 3-D Printing. Professor Bala emphasized that the laboratory is not only geared towards unleashing students’ creativity in building robots and drones but will also serve as a resource for students from diverse fields, offering real-time demonstrations from remote facilities worldwide.

Phoenix University is set to commence its 2023/2024 academic session in January 2024, following approval from the National Universities Commission.

The institution aims to provide qualitative and affordable education, with three faculties covering Natural and Applied Sciences, Computing, as well as Social and Management Sciences.

To gain admission, candidates must meet the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s minimum cut-off mark of 140 and possess five credit passes in relevant subjects, including Mathematics and English.

The university received formal approval and registration from the Federal Executive Council on May 27, 2023, and a provisional license from the National Universities Commission on June 9, 2023, after meeting all regulatory requirements.

Expressing gratitude to traditional rulers, security agencies, and the local community for unwavering support, Professor Bala extended appreciation to Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, for the initiation of the 50-km Kokona-Agwada road reconstruction, anticipating enhanced accessibility to the university campus upon completion.
