The National Association of Polytechnic Students has commended President Bola Tinubu for declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State.

According to a statement signed by the National President of NAPS, Eshiofune Oghayan, in Kaduna on Thursday, the association, which represents over 28.1 million Nigerian students, believes that the President’s action was a necessary step to restore law and order, stabilise governance, and ensure security in Rivers State.

“We commend the decisive intervention of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State. This decision, though bold, aligns with the necessity to preserve law and order, stabilise governance, and restore security in the state, which has been marred by deep-seated political and institutional crises,” the statement read.

According to NAPS, the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by Tinubu was not an arbitrary act but one rooted in the 1999 Constitution.

“Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution empowers the President to declare a state of emergency under specific conditions.

“We urge the people of Rivers State to remain calm and cooperative with the interim administration, knowing that this intervention aims to restore peace and progress. We pray for the swift restoration of peace and stability in Rivers State,” the association added.
