The Coalition of Associations of Private Schools (CAPS) in Edo on Thursday lauded the swift intervention of the state government to the recent increase in taxes by the state Internal Revenue Service for private schools.

The coalition gave the commendation in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Benin.

The statement was jointly signed by Osagie Erhunmwunse of Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED) and Lemmy Russell, National Association of Private Schools (NAPPS).

Others are Oyakhire Abdulwasiu, Association of Model Islamic Schools (AMIS) and Christy Egbune, of Association of Private School owners in Nigeria (APSON).

NAN recalls that private school owners on April 11 staged a protest over increase in taxes by the state internal revenue service.

The coalition said the state government had demonstrated fairness by given private schools the opportunity to challenge and seek a review of the substantial tax assessments.

This, he said, reflected a commendable openness to dialogue and inclusive governance.

It said the developments reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to educational
growth, equitable taxation, and the promotion of a supportive environment for private educational institutions.

“We commend the visionary leadership of Gov. Monday Okpebolo, for demonstrating responsiveness, transparency, and a strong commitment to the education sector.

“We also appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Education and the EIRS in addressing these pressing issues,” it said.
The coalition said it remained committed to partnering with the government to uphold educational standards and contribute meaningfully to the development of the state.
