Proprietress of Delta school allegedly murdered by son in shocking incident

The proprietress of His Majesty Group of Schools in Sapele, Delta State, Mrs. Fatima Umukoro, was allegedly murdered by her 25-year-old son, Emmanuel Umukoro, in a tragic incident that took place on Saturday night, September 8, 2024.

Mrs. Umukoro, wife of Rev. Prince Umukoro, the resident pastor of Victory Family Assembly International (VIFA), was well-known in Sapele for her contributions to education and the church. However, the shocking details of her death have left the community in mourning and disbelief.

Reports suggest that Emmanuel, who had been struggling with mental health issues worsened by suspected substance abuse, allegedly carried out the gruesome act. Despite undergoing rehabilitation, his battle with drug addiction reportedly continued, often resulting in unpredictable and violent outbursts.

Neighbours who spoke to the media described how the suspect allegedly hacked his mother to death with an axe before setting her body on fire. Eyewitnesses recalled seeing the gate to the Umukoro residence left open around 10 p.m., which was unusual. When concerned neighbours entered the house, they found the lifeless and badly burned body of Mrs. Umukoro.

“We saw fire coming from inside the house and found Mrs. Umukoro’s body burnt beyond recognition,” one witness recounted.

Another witness mentioned seeing Emmanuel driving out of the compound around 8:30 p.m. at high speed in his mother’s car. His suspicious behaviour and attempt to flee led to his apprehension by the police along the Sapele-Warri Road.

State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident on Sunday, September 9, stating that Emmanuel was in police custody. However, Edafe noted that investigations are still ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the crime.

The tragic death of Mrs. Umukoro has left the Sapele community in shock, with many calling for greater awareness of mental health issues and substance abuse in the region.
