Protest: State governments order the closure of schools ahead of August 1

In anticipation of planned nationwide protests, the governments of Yobe and Osun states have directed the closure of all primary and secondary schools to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education in Yobe State, Abba Idriss, announced that all schools in the state will suspend academic activities starting Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The schools are scheduled to reopen on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

Similarly, the Osun State Government has issued an order for the closure of all public and private schools from the same date, July 31, 2024. The directive was communicated by the state’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. M.A.K. Jimoh. The state government emphasized the importance of safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens during the protests, which are scheduled for August 1, 2024.

This directive comes as the #EndBadGovernance protests, calling for improved economic reforms and welfare policies under President Bola Tinubu, begin on August 1.

Ahead of the protest, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, yesterday directed all universities to make arrangements for the security and safety of staff, students and property.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, who stated the Presidency’s position in an interview on TVC late Sunday night, said no one has the right to stop peaceful protest in the country, adding that it is the power of protest that brought the return of democracy to Nigeria.

Parents, guardians, and school administrators in both states are advised to comply with the directives and ensure that students vacate school premises in an orderly manner. The authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
