Community Secondary School, Igbo-Etche in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State has emerged the overall winner of the NLNG Annual Science Quiz competition 2025 for secondary schools category in Rivers State.
The School scored 65, 041 points to beat eight other secondary schools to emerge the overall winner in the grand finale held in Port Harcourt.
Two of the students who represented the school received a laptop and school bag. Also the school was awarded a N3 million worth of science equipment.
Government Secondary School, GRA came second with 63, 982 points as two of the school representatives went home with a laptop and a school bag each, while N2. 5million worth of Science equipment was awarded to the school.
The second runners-up, Bonny National Grammar School in Bonny Island scored 55, 359 points.
The representatives went home with a laptop and school bag each, while the NLNG awarded the school with N2 million worth of Science equipment.
Speaking, the NLNG General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Dr. Sophia Horsfall said the company is determined to ensure that the School Quiz Competition is sustained to discover and support more science oriented students in the state.
Dr.Horsfall stated, “At NLNG we believe that science is the heartbeat of progress. That’s why we are proud to invest in science technology, engineering and mathematics. This quiz isn’t about answering tough questions and tough questions there will be.
“It is about exploring ideas, solving real problems and unlocking the full potential through science. As we all know the world is moving fast towards a cleaner, greener energy.
“This quiz competition really is about you, your ideas, your dreams and the role you will play through science to improve lives sustainably”
The Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Dr. AzibaolanariUzoma-Nwogu, represented by Tam Job Inisefiekabo, stated that the theme was both timely and significant, as the global community confronts the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and energy insecurity.
DrNwogu stated, “stated,” I sincerely commend the NLNG and Dragnet Solution for their unceasing dedication, enforcing scientific enquiry and academic excellence amongst the youths of Rivers State.
“Your continued investment in the future of these students is invaluable. Your unwavering commitment to education and innovation is testament to transformative power of Public Private Collaboration”.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Peters Nwagor, Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria, remarked that it was imperative to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and creativity required to drive innovation and sustainable progress.
The representatives of the school (Community Secondary School Igbo-Etche) who came tops, Uguta Emmanuel-Chigoezi and Udoka Delight, recalled the efforts they put in and expressed happiness that it paid off in the end.
However, in a surprise revelation, Master Emmanuel-Chigoezi said at a point in the competition, he and his partner (Udoka Delight) were asking for at least third position not knowing what lay ahead.
According to him, “I’m very happy and I want to thank the Rivers State Government, I specially thank the NLNG for making this quiz a success.
“As we were there I was just praying to God to help us come at least third (position), it is something. So as we came first I didn’t even know how to express my joy. I’m very happy and grateful”.
He praised their teachers for their efforts and patience for being there for them even when they ask for clarifications, “Our teachers are doing their best and we the students are also doing our best to read. The ones (areas) we don’t understand, we meet them for clarification.”
On his part, Udoka Delight said, “The preparation was not easy at all because some nights we had to stay awake to read. I didn’t believe that we would come first though anytime I had a chance I just opened my books and read.”
Present at the colourful event were top management staff of the NLNG, teachers, friends and well-wishers of the secondary schools, among other dignitaries.
