A horrifying incident unfolded at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma in Katsina State, as a student, Abubakar Nasiru Barda, lost his life in a violent clash over a romantic dispute.
The tragic incident occurred on September 28, 2023, at Darawa quarters in Dutsinma Local Government Area, sending shockwaves through the university community.
Barda’s untimely demise came after a heated altercation involving two rival groups, both vying for the affections of a fellow female student.
The confrontation took a tragic turn, culminating in the death of the 200 level Computer Science and Information Technology student.
The Katsina State Police Command swiftly responded to the incident, confirming the arrest of six suspects believed to be connected to the violent clash.
Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the spokesperson for the police, stated, “The Command takes this matter very seriously and is currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the facts surrounding the incident.”
He added, “We are working diligently to gather and analyse all available evidence, including eyewitness testimonies, with the aim of establishing a comprehensive understanding of the events that transpired while upholding the principles of justice and fairness.
As the investigation progresses, updates will be shared with the public to ensure transparency.”
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Armaya`u Hamisu Bichi, expressed deep concern and pledged to take decisive action in response to this tragedy.
He confirmed that the incident occurred outside the university’s campus but emphasised the institution’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.
“The university management has been up and doing since the occurrence of the unfortunate incident to ensure justice is served to all,” Bichi stated.
“A preliminary report submitted to the management by the committee revealed that the unfortunate incident occurred outside the university’s campus but upon receipt of information, university security were quickly mobilised to the scene for prompt intervention that halted further altercation between the students and apprehension of some students involved.”
This tragic incident, along with the recent abduction of five female students, highlights the pressing security challenges faced by the Federal University Dutsin-Ma.
The university community is now anxiously awaiting the outcome of the police investigation and the actions to be taken by the institution to address this grave issue.
