The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ogun State Wing, has declared an indefinite industrial action effective from 12:00am on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The directive affects all primary and secondary school teachers across the state.

In an official circular signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Sewakanu Oladipupo Noah, and the Principal State Secretary, Comrade Oyelere O. Samson, the Union cited unresolved demands and a mandate from the broader labour movement as the basis for the strike action.

The circular, addressed to all SWEC members, principals, headteachers, and teachers in Ogun State, read in part: “As a committed affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) is dedicated to securing a blissful future for its members. Therefore, in line with the decision of Organized Labour through a joint Workers’ Parliament held on the 14th June, 2025, all Public and Civil Servants should withdraw their services to press home the demands of workers.”

Among the key demands listed by the Union are:

Stoppage of the Contributory Pension Scheme

Implementation of a new minimum wage separate from the existing wage award

Payment of outstanding leave allowances spanning eight years

Immediate implementation of the already approved 2023 and 2024 promotions

Consequential adjustment on minimum pension

The Union stated that all avenues to resolve these issues had been exhausted, particularly regarding the Contributory Pension Scheme and related challenges.

“After exhausting all avenues for resolving industrial issues, particularly concerning Contributory Pension and other challenges as stated above, the leadership of the Union hereby directs all Primary and Secondary School Teachers to withdraw their services by staying at home starting from 12:00am on Tuesday, 15th July 2025.”

The Union assured members of continuous communication as the situation develops and emphasized that the action is lawful:

“We urge you not to entertain any fear. We thank you for your usual cooperation and rest assured of the leadership’s commitment to secure a reliable future for all.”

The letter, dated July 14, 2025, was issued from the Union’s secretariat located at The Teachers’ House, Kobape Road, Abeokuta.
