In a landmark move aimed at supporting the educational journey of its students, the Sokoto State Government has officially launched the Student Bus Services Programme, offering secondary school students subsidised transportation across the state capital for just ₦100 per ride.
Speaking during the official flag-off ceremony, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Ahmad Ladan Ala, emphasized the importance of the initiative in addressing daily transportation hurdles faced by students.
“This scheme is targeted at easing the transportation challenges for secondary school students, who will now enjoy subsidised rides at just ₦100,” Ala stated.
The programme will operate through seven strategic pickup points, namely:
Tashar Illela, Remand Home, Gagi Roundabout, Kofar Taramniya Roundabout, Kofar Atiku, Hubbare Roundabout, and Dandima Roundabout, ensuring accessibility across major routes within the city.
Commissioner Ala further explained that the student bus service forms part of Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s broader development blueprint.
“The initiative is part of the progressive agenda under the 9-Point Smart Agenda of Governor Ahmad Aliyu and reflects the administration’s commitment to improving student welfare,” he noted.
Ensuring safety and reliability, Ala revealed that all drivers enlisted for the scheme have undergone comprehensive training and were strictly instructed to follow all safety and traffic regulations.
“We are dedicated to supporting the development of the educational sector and creating a conducive learning environment for all students in the state,” the commissioner added.
The student bus service is expected to significantly reduce the burden of daily transport costs on parents and encourage greater school attendance, reinforcing the government’s push towards inclusive and accessible education in Sokoto State.
