“This is the first time I will appear in a Senate Chamber of a university that is peaceful, progressive, and truly democratic”—Sowore

In what he described as a heartfelt and symbolic homecoming, renowned human rights activist, pro-democracy advocate, and founder of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, paid a courtesy visit to Wesley University, Ondo, his native state, emphasizing the need for academic rejuvenation and purposeful leadership in Nigeria’s higher institutions.

Sowore, who was warmly received by the university community, used the visit to engage in meaningful dialogue with staff and students—steering clear of political bias and instead focusing on academic growth, intellectual freedom, and institutional development.

During his address, Sowore criticized the current state of Nigerian universities, lamenting that they have become overly politicized and no longer serve as fertile grounds for critical thinking and open-minded academic inquiry.

He said, “The university system is no longer a fertile ground for open-mindedness and critical thinking, as many educational leaders in the country today are not adequately prepared or qualified for the roles they occupy.”

However, the activist commended the leadership of Wesley University’s Vice-Chancellor, Right Reverend Professor Sunday Obeka, praising him as a model of excellence in academic leadership.

According to Sowore, “Professor Obeka is a qualified and visionary man who has truly prepared himself for the role of Vice-Chancellor.”

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude for Sowore’s visit and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to innovation, infrastructure, and academic excellence.

“We assure you that we will continue to do our best to ensure that this University grows and stands tall among its peers,” Prof. Obeka stated.

In a moment of reflection during the visit, Sowore expressed his admiration for the peaceful and forward-thinking environment of Wesley University, noting, “This is the first time I will appear in a Senate Chamber of a university that is peaceful, progressive, and truly democratic where I feel happy and safe.”

He urged the university’s management to continue investing in students as the leaders of tomorrow, encouraging them to instill values of magnanimity and humanity in the next generation.

The visit concluded with a warm reception, as Sowore was introduced to members of staff and students, sealing a day marked by inspiration, encouragement, and renewed hope for Nigeria’s academic future.
