Student Loan Scheme will commence January 2024 – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that the student loan scheme will commence implementation in January 2024.

The president stated this while speaking at the 29th edition of the annual Nigerian Economic Summit, anchored by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), on Monday. He also assured the Nigerian student community that the era of incessant strikes would be history.

“By January 2024, the new student loan must commence. To the future of our children and students, we are saying no more strikes,” said Tinubu.

On June 12, 2023, during the Democracy Day celebration, President Tinubu signed into law the student loan bill in fulfillment of one of his campaign promises.

The bill, sponsored by the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, now Chief of Staff to the President, enables easy access to higher education for indigent Nigerians through interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

The funds for the programme will be domiciled in the Ministry of Education and will only be accessed by indigent students of tertiary institutions.
