Suspected armed robbers have killed a 200-level student of the Ibrahim Babangida University Lapai in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State.

The deceased was simply identified as Jafar. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at one of the apartments where students reside off campus.

Our correspondent gathered that Jafar, said to be the only son of his parents, was allegedly stabbed on the neck by the robbers when they invaded his lodge close to the university’s gate in the early morning of the fateful day at about 2:30am.

Although, he was said to have been rushed to the General Hospital Lapai where the medical experts confirmed him dead on arrival.

Following Jafar’s killing, enraged students of IBBL University took to the streets to protest what they termed the constant killing of their colleagues by men of the underworld.

To express their anger over the dastardly act, the students blocked the Agaie-Lapai road, causing a traffic gridlock.

Arewa PUNCH further learnt that the students were said to have apprehended one of the suspected robbers and killed him.

Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Command spokesman Wasiu Abiodun, who confirmed the robbery, was silent on the killing of the suspected robber by the students.

One of the protesting students who did not disclose his identity decried the absence of a police out-post station around the campus. He also lamented that the school management did not have capacity to deal with attacks on off-campus where some of the students reside.

Following the incident, the students called on the state government and host community to design a comprehensive security architecture to safeguard the entire Lapai Local government area.

“Many universities today have police outposts within or around their campuses to enhance the safety of both students and the university community. Lapai deserves no less.

“We won’t let this one slip. We want the state governor to know of the incompetence of the school to handle this situation. When I was voicing out about it, they denied it all on their official page, claiming it was false, but today, we have seen it,” he said.

Abiodun revealed that when the police arrived at the scene of the robbery, the robbers had escaped.

He narrated: “Today being 23rd June, 2025 at about 3am, information was received that at about 2.30am, some hoodlums attacked a student’s lodge at Ndakitabu area via Lapai. Police operatives of Lapai Div rushed to the scene, but the suspected robbers had escaped.

“Unfortunately, one Jafar was stabbed on the neck, and he was rushed to General Hospital Lapai where he was later confirmed dead.

“As a result of this, some students barricaded Agaie-Lapai road, protesting against this incident.

“However, tactical teams of the Command have been dispatched to Lapai to ensure that normalcy is restored, while investigation into the unfortunate incident has commenced as the Commissioner of Police directed that the perpetrators of this heinous crime must be arrested and brought to book,” Abiodun stated
