Teachers Urged to Foster Students’ Awareness Ahead of Secondary School Education

Teachers who teach Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 students have been urged to instill the appropriate consciousness needed for secondary education in their students.

This was made known by a teacher, Tolu Joseph who recently discovered that about 50 per cent of their students did not understand the difference between the two regions of an eclipse and the types of eclipse.

Tolu, who is psychology-inclined, explained that most of the students hastily used cognitive labeling to assume that the question was asking about types of eclipse instead of regions of an eclipse. This, according to her, was due to anxiety and a lack of calmness while reading the question.

Tolu emphasised the need for JSS 1 students to develop a new level of consciousness once they enter secondary school, as it is a bit more technical and meticulous than primary school.She advised teachers to inculcate the appropriate mental ability and serenity in their students to prevent anxiety, which can lead to failure.

As students resume for the new academic session, teachers are expected to address the issue and work towards undoing the cognitive labeling mindset that makes students anxiously assume what is not.
