TeacherX, a professional networking community has held its first physical meeting in Lagos, poised to create opportunities for teachers to convene, play and relax.

Olasunkanmi Opeifa a record-breaking educator with achievements that are motivating other teachers to go above and beyond, a co-convener of TeacherX alongside Olalekan Adeeko has expressed that the teachers are human beings and their social and emotional well being is the goal of the TeacherX physical gathering that was held on Monday.

On 24th April, 2023, TeacherX, an online collaborative space for teachers, hosted its first physical gathering in celebration of the wellbeing of teachers. The event, which took place at a spacious recreational center in the heart of the city, saw an array of educators come together to unwind and connect.

The theme of the event was “The Teacher and Her Wellbeing,” and it was geared towards reminding teachers that they are not just teaching machines but human beings who need time off work to rejuvenate and recharge.

The event kicked off with an opening speech from the founder of TeacherX, who emphasised the importance of teacher wellbeing and how it can positively impact the quality of education they provide. He also thanked the teachers for showing up and creating a sense of community through the group.

The day was packed with various exciting activities that catered to the diverse interests of the teachers present. There were games, dance competitions, karaoke sessions, and an open mic for teachers to share jokes, stories, and experiences. There was also a section dedicated to self-care, where teachers were treated to massages, manicures, and pedicures.

Speaking with Edugist, Opeifa a coconvener of the event said “We want people to see that teachers are human beings, they are not to die in the classroom, they are parents and aside from everything pedagogical such as recording and assessment, training, teachers should relax.”

He emphasised that teachers should relax and it is sad that no one is concerned about the well-being of the teachers as the teacher always gives to the students.

Speaking on the programme he said that teachers came together to play ludo, dance, network, unwind and share everything aside from classroom teaching and there is a plan to make the program quarterly.

“We are trying to be disruptive and we are trying to care about the well being of a teacher.”

The teacher present expressed their gratitude for the event, stating that it was a much-needed break from their daily routine. They also appreciated the opportunity to connect with other educators and share ideas outside of the virtual space.

In summary, the TeacherX physical gathering was a resounding success, and it served as a reminder that teachers should prioritize their wellbeing to be able to provide quality education.

Teachers, like anyone else, need to relax and take care of their well-being. Teaching can be a demanding and stressful job, with heavy workloads, deadlines, and high expectations.

Taking time to relax and unwind can help reduce stress levels and prevent burnout. Teaching can be an all-consuming job, with long hours and a lot of responsibilities. Making time for relaxation and self-care can help teachers achieve better work-life balance, which is essential for overall well-being.

The group promises to organize more of such events in the future to strengthen the sense of community among educators.
