This year, over 1.9 million candidates registered for the examination, yet only a few universities have continued to attract the lion’s share of first-choice applicants. 1. LASU Takes the Crown with Over 79,000 Applicants
Lagos State University (LASU), founded in 1983 and situated in Ojo, has emerged as the most preferred university in 2025. With 79,000 candidates listing it as their first choice, LASU’s popularity has grown beyond its identity as a state-owned institution. Its appeal lies in a combination of factors, stable academic calendar, flexible course offerings, strategic location in Nigeria’s commercial hub, and increasingly, its graduate success stories.
Once perceived as a local university, LASU has reinvented itself as a high-ranking, competitive institution. Its campuses in Ikeja and Epe also offer proximity and convenience for Lagos-based students.
2. UNILAG Retains Prestige as the Academic Jewel of Lagos
Not far behind is the University of Lagos (UNILAG), which drew 58,645 first-choice applications. Established in 1962 and located in Akoka, UNILAG remains a symbol of academic excellence and cosmopolitan vibrancy. Regularly ranked among Africa’s top universities, it also boasts international partnerships, cutting-edge research, and a solid alumni network.
In 2025, the university continues to maintain its elite status, not just for its courses, but for its brand. For many young Nigerians, gaining admission into UNILAG symbolises not just academic success but upward mobility.
3. UNILORIN: Consistency, Credibility, and Calm
The University of Ilorin, with 56,734 first-choice applicants, continues to draw large numbers due to its consistent academic calendar, a rarity in Nigeria’s often strike-disrupted higher education space. Founded in 1975 and sitting on a vast 5,000-hectare campus, UNILORIN is the country’s largest university by landmass.
The school’s relatively peaceful environment, central location in Kwara State, and reputation for swift academic progress have earned it loyalty among both students and parents.
4. FUOYE’s Meteoric Rise in Popularity
The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) clocked in with 52,103 first-choice applicants, a staggering feat for a university established just over a decade ago. Operating two campuses in Oye-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti, the institution has built a growing reputation for accessibility and rapid development.
Its presence in Ekiti, a state with strong educational heritage, coupled with a youthful academic environment, has made FUOYE an increasingly attractive option for UTME candidates across Nigeria.
5. UNIZIK: Honour and Excellence in the East
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), based in Awka, Anambra State, saw 51,467 first-choice applicants. Named after Nigeria’s first president, the institution is revered for its balanced commitment to academic rigour and community impact. With campuses in Nnewi, Agulu, and Ifite-Ogwari, UNIZIK’s regional presence and federal support ensure it remains a top draw in the southeast.
6. UI: Nigeria’s Academic Flagship Still Commands Respect
The University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria’s oldest university, registered 48,291 first-choice applications. Founded in 1948 and transformed into a full-fledged university in 1962, UI has earned its reputation through decades of academic excellence, intellectual output, and cultural leadership.
Despite being somewhat selective in admissions and known for academic toughness, UI remains a dream institution for many students, especially those pursuing the humanities, sciences, and medicine.
7. UNN: Nigeria’s First Indigenous University Holds Its Own
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), saw 46,542 candidates make it their first choice. Established in 1960 and conceptualised by Nnamdi Azikiwe, UNN holds historical and symbolic significance as Nigeria’s first indigenous university. Its comprehensive academic offerings and decades of alumni influence continue to make it a force within the country’s educational landscape.
8. UNIBEN: A Beacon of Opportunity in the South-South
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) welcomed 45,686 first-choice applications. Since its inception in 1970 as the Midwest Institute of Technology, and later its transition to a federal university in 1975, UNIBEN has maintained a strong academic record. Located in Edo State, it draws students from across the country, especially those in science, engineering, and law.
9. OAU: Historic Excellence Meets Modern Realities
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, had 43,777 first-choice applicants. A brainchild of the Western Region government in the early 1960s, OAU is deeply rooted in academic tradition. Its architectural elegance, cultural significance, and scholarly output continue to attract students particularly in the arts, social sciences, and technology.
10. Federal University, Lafia – Nothern Culture Meets Modern Education
In the just concluded UTME, the Federal University, Lafia had about 42,962 applicants which is (2.11%) of the total number of JAMB applicants. This is a great development showcasing that education is as important in the Nothern Nigeria as it is in every other region.
