A final-year student at the University of Calabar, who also worked part-time as a Bolt driver, was stabbed to death on Friday night by suspected carjackers at the Mary Slessor roundabout in Calabar, Cross River.

According to sources, the deceased, identified as Francis Atabi, had offered a ride to two individuals believed to be car snatchers around 8pm when the horrifying incident took place.

While en route to their intended destination, the suspects attempted to forcefully seize the driver’s Toyota Corolla vehicle. However, the 25-year-old final-year student, who was studying Education and Political Science, bravely resisted their efforts.

“This resistance triggered the wrath of the assailants, who viciously stabbed him multiple times and callously tied a rope around his neck,” the sources said.

They added that “Amidst the ensuing chaos and struggle, the driver lost control of the vehicle and accidentally collided with a security officer.”

It was also reported that the security officer was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital in Calabar.

The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the incident and initiated an investigation into the matter.

SP Irene Ugbo, the command’s spokesperson, assured the public that every possible effort would be made to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice.
