The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in collaboration with the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB), is set to train Mathematics and Science teachers across the 16 local government areas of the state.
The capacity-building programme, tagged “Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE)”, has received the approval of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as part of ongoing reforms to strengthen education in Kwara.
Chairman of KWSUBEB, Professor Shehu Raheem Adaramaja, disclosed in Ilorin that the 12-day training will run from September 1 to 12, 2025, targeting 790 teachers. He noted that the initiative is designed to equip teachers with modern pedagogical skills for improved classroom performance.
“This training is another milestone in enhancing the capacity of our teachers at the basic education level. We believe that when teachers are empowered at the foundation stage, it translates to stronger learning outcomes for pupils,” Adaramaja said.
The training will cover three modules: core teacher’s cycle IV training, local cycle IV, and step training with the board. According to the chairman, participants will be equipped with strategies that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective delivery of Mathematics and Science subjects.
Professor Adaramaja also revealed that a second batch of 795 teachers will later benefit from another phase of the training, which will focus on digital productivity, software development, and other innovative teaching skills.
Venues for the training include Bishop Smith and Queen Elizabeth Schools in Ilorin, as well as various Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) across the state.
“The State Government remains committed to investing in teacher development because quality education begins with well-trained teachers,” Adaramaja stressed.
