The students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto have cried out to the management over the epileptic of power supply, damaged state of appliances and toilets despite the increase on the hostel fees.

Recall that the school management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto opened the hostel portal on April 5, 2023 for interested students to apply for the halls of residence.

However, the students have lamented the sudden increase in their hostel fees.

There is an increase of five thousand naira (NGN5,000) on the fees that every applicant will pay for academic sessions. This development has made students lament.

While speaking with Edugist, Abdulrasheed Akere, a 300 level student of Education Biology did not believe the management could increase the hostel fees even though the hostel is still lacking proper maintenance.

“Despite several things that the hostel is lacking, I wonder why they increase its fees without any maintenance.” Akere commented.

He stretched further that the increment inconvenients the students most especially the students coming from other states who have a lot of expenses to take care of.

In her own reaction, Sulyman Ummulkhayr, a 200 level student of Linguistics lamented that the students are suffering because of the epileptic of power supply especially during the hot season in the state. She stated that the solar electricity provided by the school management was not constant.

“In my hostel for example, there are some rooms without bulbs, fans and some rooms are even leaking. Though there are some rooms with fans, it’s better not to have fans because it’s not working the way it is supposed to. Even the rooms with good workable fans are not able to use it because of lack of power supply,” she remarked.

A 400-level Student of English and Literary Studies, Abdulrasak Mubarak (not real name) told Edugist that the students are at the receiving end especially during this period of recession.

“Talking about the increase on students hostel fee, indeed, it would affect students a lot because despite the 50% increase on hostels, there’s also an increase of the same percent on students’ school fees and we all are aware of how every individual battles recession these days,” Mubarak agitated.

DSA reacts

In an interview with the university’s Dean of Students Affair, Prof. Umar Aliyu said that the management is currently compiling the list of items needed to be repaired in every hall of residence.

“We will start repairing the damages as soon as we receive information from those in charge,” he assured.
