The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has approved the appointment of Professor Juwon Tunde Arotiba as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), effective Thursday, August 14, 2025. His appointment follows the retirement of Professor Aderonke M. Baiyeroju, who bowed out of active service on August 13, 2025. Professor Arotiba has since assumed duty and commenced his administrative responsibilities at Nigeria’s premier university.
Professor Arotiba, an eminent academic and maxillofacial surgeon, was born on December 13, 1957, in Mopa, Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State. He began his education at ECWA Primary School, Enugbo, Ileteju Mopa (1965–1970), and ECWA Secondary School, Mopa (1971–1975), before proceeding to the School of Basic Studies at the then Kwara State College of Technology (now Kwara Polytechnic) from 1975 to 1977, where he obtained his Advanced Level Certificate moderated by the University of Cambridge.
He earned his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from the University of Ibadan in 1983 and later obtained a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics from the same institution in 2007. His commitment to continuous learning and professional advancement has defined his long-standing career in academic dentistry and oral surgery.
Arotiba holds several professional fellowships, including the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (1992), Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (1997), and Fellowship of the International College of Dentistry (2013). In 2020, he was conferred with the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medical scholarship.
His association with the University of Ibadan began in 1992 when he joined as a Lecturer I. Over the years, he has risen through the ranks to become a Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, and an Honorary Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
Professor Arotiba’s research interests span Orofacial Oncology, Maxillofacial Reconstruction, and Dental Implantology. With over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications, two book chapters, and one co-edited book, his scholarly impact is widely acknowledged. His Google Scholar profile records an H-index of 25 and over 2,500 citations, reflecting his global standing in maxillofacial research.
He is an active member of numerous professional bodies, including the Nigerian Dental Association, Nigerian Medical Association, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and the West African College of Surgeons. Internationally, he is affiliated with the African Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He also serves as an Associate Editor for leading academic journals such as the African Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Nigerian Dental Journal, and Nigerian Journal of Postgraduate Medicine.
His leadership record is extensive, having served as Vice-President of the Nigerian Dental Association, foundation member and past National President of the Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and Treasurer of the African Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has also contributed to professional governance as a Board Member and Faculty Chairman of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and as a member of the Senate of the University of Ibadan between 2009 and 2017.
Within the University of Ibadan, Professor Arotiba has held several administrative positions, including Sub-Dean (Dentistry) (2000–2004), Sub-Dean (Postgraduate) (2006–2008), Head of Department (2011–2014), and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry (2014–2016). He also chaired the University Senate Truth Committee from 2018 to 2021, where his leadership was lauded for fairness, transparency, and integrity.
Until his latest appointment, he represented the Senate on the University’s Governing Council. His elevation to Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) is widely regarded as a recognition of his exemplary service, academic excellence, and deep commitment to institutional growth.
Professor Arotiba is married to Mrs Oluwafunmilayo Oreoluwa Arotiba, and they are blessed with children and grandchildren. Known for his humility, diligence, and integrity, he is expected to bring visionary leadership and renewed vigour to academic administration at the University of Ibadan.
