UNICEF urges Adamawa govt to boost basic education funding

UNICEF’s education specialist, Abdulraham Ado, Ph.D, has implored the Adamawa government to increase domestic financing for basic education in the state’s rural communities.

The call was made during the commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Education in Yola, under the theme “Learning for Lasting Peace.”

Ado emphasized the pivotal role domestic financing plays in ensuring quality education, particularly for vulnerable and internally displaced children residing in rural areas.

He underscored the significance of the “Teaching at the Right Level” initiative and urged the state Universal Basic Education Board to sustain its implementation across public schools.

Speaking on the timeliness of this year’s theme, Dr Ado stressed the need for enhanced collaboration with security agencies to establish safe and conducive learning environments.

He emphasized that such efforts were essential for the holistic development of students and the broader community.

In response, the Commissioner for Education, Garba Pella, expressed gratitude to UNICEF for its invaluable contributions to the state’s educational progress.

Pella affirmed education as the top three priorities of the administration and reassured that the government is committed to ensuring quality education in Adamawa.

Represented by the Director of Quality Assurance, Mohammed Nasidi, Pella highlighted ongoing governmental initiatives, including plans to construct additional structures to provide a conducive learning atmosphere.

He acknowledged the challenge of out-of-school children and emphasized the importance of collaboration with partners to make a positive impact.

As part of the celebration, UNICEF took tangible steps by distributing learning materials to children in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps and vulnerable populations in selected public schools across the state.

This proactive measure aligns with UNICEF’s commitment to bridging educational gaps and fostering lasting peace through knowledge empowerment.
