UNILAG 1984 alumni donate internet facilities

The 1984 alumni of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos have donated internet facilities to their alma mater to enhance research and learning capabilities.

The donation, the association noted, would equip students with the skills and resources necessary to stay competitive long after graduation.

This contribution, which includes cable LAN devices and 21 wireless access point installations covering offices and classrooms within the department, was part of the activities marking the class’s 40th anniversary.

During the unveiling ceremony, the alumni chairman, Mr. Fred Ohwawha, stated, “Today, we inaugurated an upgrade to the Internet facility. We graduated from this university 40 years ago and have undertaken several projects since then. But we returned to see what more we could contribute.

“We all know we are in a digital age, and without the Internet, students face some difficulties and can’t catch up. The Internet is, therefore, provided for the students and staff in the faculty so that whenever they are around, there won’t be any problem with their academic.

“We have intervened and added quality to the educational infrastructure of the department.

This is a class project. We refer to ourselves as family. We are proud to give back to the department that shaped us into the professionals we are today. For us, this move means a lot to us, as it is also to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the class.”

Speaking on behalf of the UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, praised the group for their donation.

He noted that this contribution reflected the university’s strong and positive relationship with its alumni.

He said, “This donation demonstrates the power of alumni engagement and commitment to the growth of our institution. We are grateful for your contributions to the development of our university.

“You have set a shining example for future generations to follow, demonstrating the impact of alumni support on the advancement of education. People like you have shown us that with your support, we can continue to be the university of first choice.”

The Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Prof. Oloruntola Sunday, stated that the donation, being “timely and appropriate,” would greatly enhance the department’s ability to produce well-rounded graduates equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in the digital age.

“We will make sure that we do what is expected of us to maintain the facilities. We will be monitoring it, and we will be advising our students on the proper utilisation of this project,” the HOD said.
