The University of Lagos has appointed renowned United States-based Nigerian physician and CEO of Cardiac Renal & Vascular Associates in Jackson, Mississippi, Dr Olurotimi Badero, as a Distinguished Fellow and Visiting Professor of Medicine in its Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Department of Medicine.
Prof Badero, celebrated globally as the world’s first and only board-certified interventional cardio nephrologist, is expected to play a pivotal role in mentoring Nigeria’s next generation of doctors, particularly in the specialised field of cardiology and nephrology.
A statement by Iwosan Lagoon Hospital, Lagos, said his appointment revealed a growing movement of diaspora health professionals returning home to invest in local capacity development and reshape the future of medical education through mentorship, research, and innovation.
“The future of Nigerian medicine depends on how well we nurture and mentor upcoming professionals.
“I am committed to transferring knowledge, building local expertise, and equipping our young physicians to lead on a global stage,” Prof Badero said.
A native of Isonyin, Ogun State, Prof Badero achieved a historic milestone, believed to be the first Professor of Medicine from the town, an accomplishment that has been hailed as both personal and communal pride.
In addition to his leadership as CEO of Cardiac Renal & Vascular Associates in Jackson, Mississippi, Prof Badero currently serves part-time as the Clinical Head and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Program and Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at Iwosan Lagoon Hospitals, Lagos
Speaking on the appointment, Iwosan Lagoon Hospital described the development as a recognition of Prof Badero’s unique academic and clinical footprint.

“His appointment is widely viewed as a model of how mentorship, when championed by experienced diaspora professionals, can catalyze innovation, improve healthcare outcomes, and build sustainable medical institutions across the country,” it said.
The University of Lagos noted that Prof Badero’s involvement would enhance the training of medical residents and cardiology consultants through structured mentorship, advanced research collaborations, and alignment of medical education with international best practices.
