The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has called on alumni members to deepen their support for the institution to enhance its growth and development.
The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, who made the appeal at a special evening of engagement with stakeholders, partners and alumni at a banquet organised by the Office of Advancement, described them as a key part of the university’s success story.
She commended their continued support, optimism and belief in the UNILAG dream, noting that it is this mindset that drives the university’s growth and transformation.
Ogunsola appreciated stakeholders for their commitment and generosity, and urged them to redouble their efforts in uplifting their shared heritage.
She said: “We are not just asking for donations, we are inviting you to invest in something larger than all of us; the continued excellence and impact of the university that helped shape who we are.”
The vice-chancellor listed several ongoing projects funded by alumni and partners, urging them to continue supporting the institution through mentorship, philanthropy, partnerships, and advocacy, saying this will shape the next chapter of UNILAG.
She also commended some staff members who, despite low wages, still support indigent students from their pockets.
She said UNILAG remains committed to innovation, citing its collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force on braking systems, and ongoing student projects on alternative energy.
“Nobody is bothered about an institution more than its alumni. Together we thrive, forever we strive,” she said.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), underscored the importance of collaboration between the university and its alumni, donors, and strategic partners.
He enjoined them to be more intentional about their support for the institution that nurtured them, and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to transparency and efficiency in resource utilisation.
The senior advocate noted that alumni support is key to the survival of any institution, citing how Harvard and New York Universities raised over $54 billion through alumni donations.
Chairman of UNILAG Advancement Board, Chief Bayo Ojo (SAN), preached unity among alumni members and partners, saying this will further enhance the growth of the institution.
On his part, a former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, praised alumni’s credibility and promised to rally others to support the university’s plans.
Former President Worldwide of UNILAG Alumni Association, Chief Sunny Kuku, and three Justices of the Supreme Court were among the many dignitaries who graced the occasion with their presence.
