The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has refuted reports suggesting an increase in students’ tuition for the 2025/2026 academic session, explaining that the institution only integrated existing dues into a single payment structure.
In a statement signed by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit, UNILAG said the restructuring followed a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education mandating all universities under the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to unify payable fees.
“The attention of the University of Lagos has been drawn to reports and online discussions suggesting that the institution has increased fees for the 2025/2026 Academic Session.
The University wishes to reassure students, parents, and the general public that there has been no fee hike. What has taken place is a consolidation of approved dues that students previously paid separately at the faculty and departmental levels, charges which were not earlier captured on the students’ central payment portal,” the statement read.
According to the university, the consolidation ensures all legitimate fees are captured in one place for transparency and ease of payment — particularly for beneficiaries of NELFUND.
“In compliance with a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education, all universities with students benefiting from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have been instructed to unify all payable fees into a single structure. This ensures that once students make payment through their official portal, no other payment will be collected at the faculty and departmental levels,” it added.
The management emphasized that variations in payable amounts across programmes reflect their specific academic requirements and do not constitute a fee increase.
UNILAG expressed appreciation to students, parents, and other stakeholders for their understanding, assuring that the institution remains committed to excellence, accountability, and global competitiveness.
